
Classic Calzone
Ingredients
- 2 cups warm water
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp active dry yeast
- 3 1/2 cups of Organic Marina’s Artisan Foods “00” flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp of organic Marina’s Artisan Foods extra virgin olive oil
- Filling ingredients (choose some or all):
- 8 oz mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
- 1/2 cup ham or pepperoni, sliced
- 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 1/2 cup bell peppers, sliced
- Fresh basil leaves
Instructions
- Make the dough: Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-7 minutes. Add flour, salt, and olive oil. Mix and knead for 5-7 minutes.
- Let the dough rise: Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours.
- Prepare the filling: Mix ricotta cheese, mozzarella, and your chosen ingredients.
- Assemble the calzone: Divide the dough into 2-4 portions. Roll each into a thin circle.
- Add filling: Place filling on one half of the circle.
- Fold and seal: Fold the other half over and press edges to seal.
- Bake: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Serve: Enjoy hot with marinara sauce.
Variations
- Try different fillings like spinach, artichokes, or sun-dried tomatoes.
- Add some spice with red pepper flakes.
