Classic Calzone

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups warm water
  2. 2 tsp sugar
  3. 1 tsp active dry yeast
  4. 3 1/2 cups of Organic Marina’s Artisan Foods “00” flour
  5. 1 tsp salt
  6. 2 tbsp of organic Marina’s Artisan Foods extra virgin olive oil
  7. Filling ingredients (choose some or all):
    • 8 oz mozzarella cheese, shredded
    • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
    • 1/2 cup ham or pepperoni, sliced
    • 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced
    • 1/2 cup bell peppers, sliced
    • Fresh basil leaves

Instructions

  1. Make the dough: Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-7 minutes. Add flour, salt, and olive oil. Mix and knead for 5-7 minutes.
  2. Let the dough rise: Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours.
  3. Prepare the filling: Mix ricotta cheese, mozzarella, and your chosen ingredients.
  4. Assemble the calzone: Divide the dough into 2-4 portions. Roll each into a thin circle.
  5. Add filling: Place filling on one half of the circle.
  6. Fold and seal: Fold the other half over and press edges to seal.
  7. Bake: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Serve: Enjoy hot with marinara sauce.

Variations

  • Try different fillings like spinach, artichokes, or sun-dried tomatoes.
  • Add some spice with red pepper flakes.
